Dog Training F.A.Q.s

Q

Can my dog be trained?

A

All dogs have the ability to be trained, age isn’t a barrier in dog training, it is you as the owner, your willingness to learn and implement what you have been taught by your trainer. All training should be done in a comfortable calm environment and without stress.  As long as your dog is medically fit and has no mental issues training can start today :) All dogs no matter the age can be trained you should start as soon as you new dog enters your family situation. It doesn’t mater if it is 8 weeks, 8 mths or 8 years old all dogs need to understand their boundaries

Q

Does training my dog change his personality?

A

A dog trained correctly will  be the same dog when he has completed a course of training, but just have some extra skills. You as a owner and handler will also have more skills to communicate with your dog without all those frustrations.

Q

Are you a Positive Reinforcement Trainer?

A

We do use positive reinforcement, in the form of praise, love, affection, whilst showing leadership not only will your training move ahead in leaps and bounds but your emotional bond and partnership  with your canine friend will be growing stronger as each session progresses.

Usually when you hear "Positive Reinforcement" it is training while bribing your dog with treats, food or a toy. This is a method and does not work in real life situations. These real life situations are when there are distractions present  in the form of a cat running by or another untrained dog running by on the beach and/or  no treats to bribe them with. When our clients have been in this position in the past the need for  food / treats goes up the beach with their new friend. Why would you want bribe your dog using treats when you can get them to listen to your voice and listen to you out of love and respect

We also train detection dogs and some of these dogs are trained on food but these dogs have a real addiction to food and will do anything including searching for a scent and sitting to get that reward. We will asses 10 dogs to get  2 of these dogs that are suitable for detection work the rest are simply not motivated by food so are rejected and placed into families

Q

Can you train an aggressive dog?

A

We can provide a training solution for any dog and it’s leader. That is a blanket statement that obviously has variables attached to it. Some of those variables may be linked to medical reasons or a neurological disorder may be present that may need a combination of approaches.

Aggression is a natural and expected form of communication in canines. There are different types of aggression obviously and each of them requires a specific management process. We usually find that in most cases there is void of understanding in the dog’s leader, the undesirable behaviour is a direct result of that. Our programs are therefore not only designed with the dog in mind but they are also tailored to teach the dog’s handler the correct method of leadership and management for that particular dog.
