Dog Training Tips and FAQs

This section of our website with include  some great dog training tips and FAQs which will include not only tips and FAQs on obedience dogs but also working dogs

These may be very basic information but we find this is sometimes the most useful.
If you wish to ask a question please feel free to email us on our contact page or  head straight to a great forum on dog training

1

Always start when you are in a positive mood: This is necessary when you train your dog or puppy by offering preferably  a lot of praise when they do anything correctly. Never go out and train your dog or puppy when you are in a bad mood
Remember, this is fun!

1

Now you are in a great mood to do some dog training remember even 10 minutes a day off correct training will benefit your dog or puppy.

1

All dogs will benefit from some sort of training, the earlier you start training with your dog the better, if you have acquired an older dog still start training him / her and as its done right this will also enable you to form a great bond with your dog

1

“ Rub His Nose in It”  NEVER do this to your dog or puppy. This is an out of date method that someone who knows nothing about dog psychology thought would work. Also NEVER hit your dog!  Even if you think it is only a Newspaper! This may make your dog afraid of you or he /she may even become aggressive.

1

Always use food rewards when training your dog, using a special treat,  WRONG ... We can argue for hours about this subject, but not all dogs can be trained using food treats. Your dog may prefer a ball or even a simple “Good Boy” will satisfy most dogs

1

Make the effort to train your dog every day. Even if is just asking it to sit at the backdoor and not jump up before feeding, or at the front gate before a walk. This will start to build good handling habits. Make sure the whole family practices it. Again make sure your sessions are fun.

1

Socialising your new dog is one of the most important things you can do for him. This means getting him used to everything that is in your life if you go to the beach then water, waves, sand , kids, other dogs, cars and car travel, walking on grass I could go on for hours, these all need to be introduced into your dogs life with a positive attitude. Your goal should be to expose him to as many different experiences as possible while he is still young enough to benefit from them.

Looking after your dog “The Basics”

Always ensure that your dog has clean  fresh water. Make sure you check it every day. If you see slime building up in the bucket empty it and use a scourer to clean it off. Then refill it. Your dog will appreciate it and it makes for a healthier friend

Wash your dog regularly, this means for example once every couple of weeks. However do not over-wash as this can cause dryness and flaking skin. Use a shampoo that is as natural as possible, suitable for animals and contains a good natural insect repellant like Tea Tree Oil. Using medicated shampoos regularly can lead to your dog having a  dry itchy coat and this will drive him mad. Go natural for your pets sake

Groom your dog regularly. This will give you a chance to remove dead hair from your dog’s coat, to check for external parasites and to develop a bond with your dog. Check the eyes, ears, mouth and between the pads. Check your dog’s nails. They should be clipped short but not too short to make them bleed. If you are unsure about clipping your dogs nails just ask your  vet.

Always feed your dog fresh food that is as raw and natural as possible. Commercial dog foods are convenient but are not the best thing to feed you dog. Go for raw meats, fish, vegetables and fresh raw bones. Mackerel and sardines will enhance a shiny healthy coat without medication.

If your dog lives outside that is great but he/she needs good shelter, somewhere that they can escape all of the elements, their own bed, checking and cleaning it regularly will ensure you keep fleas at bay. Also clean your back yard daily of all dog poo.
