Looking after your dog “The Basics” Always ensure that your dog has clean fresh water. Make sure you check it every day. If you see slime building up in the bucket empty it and use a scourer to clean it off. Then refill it. Your dog will appreciate it and it makes for a healthier friend Wash your dog regularly, this means for example once every couple of weeks. However do not over-wash as this can cause dryness and flaking skin. Use a shampoo that is as natural as possible, suitable for animals and contains a good natural insect repellant like Tea Tree Oil. Using medicated shampoos regularly can lead to your dog having a dry itchy coat and this will drive him mad. Go natural for your pets sake Groom your dog regularly. This will give you a chance to remove dead hair from your dog’s coat, to check for external parasites and to develop a bond with your dog. Check the eyes, ears, mouth and between the pads. Check your dog’s nails. They should be clipped short but not too short to make them bleed. If you are unsure about clipping your dogs nails just ask your vet. Always feed your dog fresh food that is as raw and natural as possible. Commercial dog foods are convenient but are not the best thing to feed you dog. Go for raw meats, fish, vegetables and fresh raw bones. Mackerel and sardines will enhance a shiny healthy coat without medication. If your dog lives outside that is great but he/she needs good shelter, somewhere that they can escape all of the elements, their own bed, checking and cleaning it regularly will ensure you keep fleas at bay. Also clean your back yard daily of all dog poo. |
